Then it’s down through Thailand, with stops near the Burmese border — if only we could figure out a way to cross it, but it’s doubtful, although perhaps we’ll be able to interview and, who knows, be of some assistance to cyclone refugees in Thailand — to visit my grandfather’s grave (he was a British P.O.W. who worked on the Burma Thai Railway and died as the end of the war closed too slowly in) then down through Malaysia, with stops in Penang, where my Dad was born, and Ipoh, where my Mom started her life, and finally back to Singapore.
We’ll be taking some precautions we didn’t need to — or even consider — our last trip to SE Asia. This time, because we’ll be in areas where malaria is commonplace, we’ve gotten a load of immunizations. Here’s a pic of Langston stoically accepting his round of five shots. actually, come to think of it, there is no malaria vaccine; we’re getting pills for that, malarone, I think it’s called. so the shots were for hepatitis and typhoid and a few other things.

Just saw Rambo … Stay out of Burma. If your around Northern Tailand and need to travel on the Salween River look for a long boat docked at a Cobra show and ask for John Rambo to be your boatman. If you run into trouble with river pirates or the ruthless Nationalist Army of Burma he is the best man to have as your guide. Plus he is an American so he speaks English as well as the local languages and for $10 he’ll bowfish up some lunch for you and for a pint of Hagen Daus he’ll catch a Cobra for you (a true Kodak moment).
Kailani and I just saw the new Indiana Jones movie and part of that takes place where Daddy Don Burns just traveled through. I wonder if he picked up any crystal skulls or came across a city of gold, hope he had his bullwhip with him. I think Don and Gaby will be in Cartagena, Colombia soon so we will probably watch “Romancing the Stone” in the near future. Should probably break down and watch “Motorcycle Daries” since they are on the same trip Ché Guevara took as a young man.
Lovin’ this blog so keep us posted often. I’ll try to find more movies that take place where your going. Since we can’t be with you we’ll fill our heads with worrysome senerios from unrealistic movies so we will not only be happy when you return … we will be relieved!
